PACKET: The Greco-Persian Wars (Persian Empire)

Non-Novice Crisis Committee

In the words of Voltaire, “History is only the pattern of silken slippers descending the stairs to the thunder of hobnailed boots climbing upward from below.” His inspiration was, in part, the Achaemenid Persian Empire under Xerxes. His predecessor, Darius the Great, developed a personal hatred for the Greeks that repulsed his invasion, but right before he could exact his revenge, his reign ended in his ignominious death. Now the task falls to Xerxes, King of Kings, to finish what Darius started. The invasion has begun, of course, by coercing the northernmost Greek states to bloodlessly join his great empire. But will Xerxes and his vast administration be able to integrate this latest frontier into their empire? Or will their opponents somehow manage to outlast the greatest army the world has ever seen?
