Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Committee

This is a double delegation committee

Topic 1 - Indigenous Peoples

Throughout the recent global push towards decolonization many indigenous communities have gained more recognition and rights within their countries. However, it has very much been an uphill battle. Indigenous communities in many states still face persecution and forced removal from native lands based on ethnic, religious, and cultural differences. These actions directly break both the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Furthermore, voices within indigenous communities have called for greater representation within the UN itself. The delegates of SOCHUM must create a plan to provide indigenous communities the platform to self-advocate as well as define a plan for increasing representation of indigenous communities on the global stage.

Topic 2 - Hate Speech

As social media has steadily grown to become an integral part of modern society, so has the prevalence of hate speech. Hate speech includes all abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice on the basis of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or similar grounds, and has been seen to clearly increase levels of xenophobia, racism, and sexism internationally. Due to the unregulated and often unrestricted nature of social media and online forums, hate speech is inherently hard to regulate especially for individual states as no one can control the internet. SOCHUM delegates will have to find ways to fight back against hate speech and its effects.
